Traveling from San Jose, Costa Rica to Lake Arenal, take the Interamerican Highway (Route 1) westward about 2 1/2 - 3 hours to Canas (see your map) where you will turn to the right. There are large signs at the turn-off point indicating Tilaran and Lago Arenal. Pass through Canas about 8 blocks until you reach a "T" and take a left and ascend the mountains to reach Tilaran.

At the outskirts of Tilaran up a curvy hill, there is an intersection with a sign for Lago Arenal, take a sharp left and continue around the western end of Lake Arenal to arrive at the town of Nuevo Arenal (about 1 hours drive from Canas). Approaching Nuevo Arenal, at the top of the hill continue past town and the gas station on the right, without turning descend the hill and turn left where we have a VILLA DECARY sign. This is still the main lake road and we are 2 kms. beyond on the left.

It is best not to drive at night, due to unpredictable road conditions, so try to arrive at VILLA DECARY by 5 PM.
